National Stadium

The home of South African football, a calabash-styled jewel among the mine dumps of Johannesburg.

This is National Stadium SA, formerly known as Soccer City, the pride of a nation which affords soccer a special place in its heart.

The South African government has exclusive rights over National Stadium SA, holding a 99-year lease with the City of Johannesburg. The Joburg Metro ensures that this flagship venue remains a facility for all South Africans to enjoy and use equitably.

National Stadium SA has undergone a R3.4bn revamp, with construction starting in early 2007.
Take 80 000 cubic metres of concrete, 9 000 tons of reinforcing steel, and 8 000 tons of structural steel. Remove around 120 000 cubic metres of soil. Add 80 000 cubic metres of brickwork, 1 350 piles, 38 000 cubic metres of cladding, and 70 000 cubic metres of roof fabric.

The result is the new National Stadium SA, marvellously reborn from its humble beginnings back in 1987. National Stadium SA has been transformed into one of the most striking, impressive and well-equipped stadiums in the world.
