The FNB Stadium proudly managed and maintained by Stadium Management South Africa hosted the opening match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the final.
FNB Stadium has also hosted spectacular concerts including the likes of Justin Bieber and Ed Sheeran.
Here we take you down memory lane to the construction of FNB Stadium.
FNB Stadium had a major upgrade for the 2010 FIFA World Cup with a new design inspired by the shape of an African pot the calabash.
The construction was completed on the 21st of October 2009.
A team of architects, designers and construction companies from South Africa and all over the world united to create the beautiful calabash.
The team which renovated FNB Stadium has special memories of this once in a lifetime project.
Bob van Bebber architect.
“Coming together sharing an experience with your friends and leaving and being in a better state of mind when you leave is what this represents.”
Stefania Ferrante- Cimolai Armando Spa
“It was a great opportunity to work with such big groups and a team from all over the world. The relationship that we created during these fourteen months of work was great.”
Fanie Sadler- Phumelela
“We did do vigorous testing there was a lot of co-ordination between the architect in terms of the specifications to make sure we conform. There were waterproofing tests done. There were impact tests done and they all came out very successful, so we were happy to proceed.”
Mike Moody- Grinaker
“We attacked the job in a professional way. It’s not easy doing a curved structure of that height. It’s very difficult to co-ordinate something which has never been done before.”
Molefe Llale- Quantity Surveyor
“It’s taken a lot of guts from the professional team for the stadium to be where it is, and it is just something out of the ordinary.”
